Hadronic interactions and extensive air showers

چکیده

Understanding hadronic multiparticle production is important for deriving the composition and energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays from air shower measurements at high energy. In this article, predictions of hadronic interaction models are discussed, emphasizing uncertainties and constraints due to model assumptions and accelerator measurements. The sensitivity of shower observables to model predictions is illustrated by considering two representative examples, the electron/muon shower size at different detection altitudes and the longitudinal shower profile, and the need for measuring several observables of each shower is stressed.

Extensive Air Showers and Accelerator Data – The NEEDS Workshop

Very high energy cosmic rays are typically studied by measuring extensive air showers formed by secondary particles produced in collisions with air nuclei. The indirect character of the measurement makes the physics interpretation of cosmic ray data strongly dependent on simulations of multiparticle production in showers. In April 2002 about 50 physicists met in Karlsruhe to discuss various asp...

The interpretation of extensive air shower (EAS) measurements is strongly dependent on the hadronic interaction models used for simulating reference showers. We study the importance of low-energy hadronic interactions in simulated air showers, generated with the simulation package CORSIKA, for the observed characteristics of extensive air showers. In particular we investigate in detail the ener...

On the mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays derived from measurements of the average depth of the maximum of extensive air showers

The impact of properties of individual hadronic interactions like the inelastic cross section and the elasticity on the development of extensive air showers is investigated. Simulations of air showers are performed, their predictions are compared to measured values of integral muon multiplicities and the average depth of the shower maximum. Effects on the mean logarithmic mass derived from the ...

Received XXX At high energy, cosmic rays can only be studied by measuring the extensive air showers they produce in the atmosphere of the Earth. Although the main features of air showers can be understood within a simple model of successive interactions, detailed simulations and a realistic description of particle production are needed to calculate observables relevant to air shower experiments...

Measurements of the Muon Content of UHECR Air Showers with the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory, recently completed, has been operational since 2004. As a hybrid experiment, it allows for a wide range of measurements of UHECR-induced extensive air showers (EAS), including measurements of the EAS particle content on ground which is sensitive to high-energy hadronic interactions. We present the results of several independent measurements of the EAS muon content ...

Hadronic multiparticle production in extensive air showers and accelerator experiments

Using CORSIKA for simulating extensive air showers, we study the relation between the shower characteristics and features of hadronic multiparticle production at low energies. We report about investigations of typical energies and phase space regions of secondary particles which are important for muon production in extensive air showers. Possibilities to measure relevant quantities of hadron pr...
